LASOS | REYES Dance

LASOS, Spanish word for ties, is a new work of film and live performance exploring the links between childhood trauma and chronic pain within the context of Latin American culture and traditions.

Conceived and directed by Jocelyn Reyes, LASOS mines the artist’s personal story of recovery from debilitating pain. Like many first-generation Latin Americans living in the U.S., Reyes received a loving but severe upbringing in which corporal punishment was commonplace. After moving to San Francisco in 2017, she began to develop signs of fibromyalgia, a condition which eventually overwhelmed her central nervous system leaving her bedridden for months. LASOS explores the journey Reyes made in the year that followed, uncovering the hidden ties between her childhood experience of abuse and her present-day affliction. With LASOS, Reyes aims to give hope that it’s possible to break the cycle of suffering just as it’s possible to break the cycle of violence.

In the creation of LASOS, Reyes will be collaborating with movement artists Jess Bozzo, Caitlin Hicks, Maya Mohsin and Brooke Terry, music composers Emmet Webster, Michael Webster and Wolf Woodcock, lighting designer Grisel Torres and costume designer Monique Prieto.

LASOS is generously supported by the Joe Goode Performance Group Co-Production Program, the CA$H Grant from Dancers’ Group and the San Francisco Arts Commission.

COVID PROTOCOLS:

  • The Annex requires audiences to be masked at all times. No concessions will be available.

2022 FACT/SF Summer Dance Festival

The 2022 FACT/SF Summer Dance Festival brings together an array of contemporary dance works by choreographers from the Bay Area and beyond. This year’s Festival features premieres by FACT/SF, Amit Patel & Ishika Seth, Chinchin Hsu, Sharp & Fine, Drama Tops (Seattle), and slowdanger (Pittsburgh). All 6 groups will perform each evening, and both evenings of the Festival will be followed by a short post-show discussion. The Festival has an estimated run time of 80-minutes, with one intermission.

The 2022 Festival unfolds over two weekends, the first at the Joe Goode Annex (July 29 & 30) and the second at ODC Theater (August 5-7). The second weekend includes a world premiere by FACT/SF and a regional premiere by DISCO RIOT (San Diego). More info: factsf.org

The FACT/SF Summer Dance Festival is part of FACT/SF Fieldwork, a set of programs that nourish the contemporary dance ecology by providing opportunities, support, and material resources to fellow artists. In addition to the Festival, Fieldwork currently includes Production Support Grants, Fiscal Sponsorship, Summer Dance Lab Scholarships, and our touring platform, PORT (Peer Organized Reciprocal Touring).

This year’s Festival was curated via an open self-nomination process in which artists were paid to self-nominate themselves for consideration. Every artist received a meeting with members of the 8-person curatorial panel, and curation by the panel was done by consensus. FACT/SF will open its next round of self-nominations in October 2022 for programming in 2023.

The 2022 FACT/SF Summer Dance Festival is supported by FACT/SF Individual Donors and a Legacy Grant from the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation. FACT/SF is additionally supported by the California Arts Council and San Francisco Grants for the Arts. This year’s Festival kicks off FACT/SF’s 15th anniversary season, which will continue through 2023.

Nol Simonse: Death Pod / Christy Funsch: kid subjunctive

DANCE LOVERS is an annual performance event held in San Francisco around Valentine’s Day.  James Graham Dance Theatre produces and curates DANCE LOVERS. Graham invites artists to present duets in various styles/genres with diverse pairings (friends, lovers, family members). The event began in 2011 at what was then called Kunst-Stoff Arts in San Francisco.

Megan Lowe Dances presents “Tangram”, an evening of dynamic partnering featuring Megan Lowe and Brenton Cheng that uses physical puzzles to explore relationship, geometry, and their shared Chinese heritage. Propelled by momentum, Brenton and Megan lift and are lifted by each other in ever-changing roles of mover and moved, pushing the boundaries of what is possible. “Tangram” performances have grown from the seeds of “Finger Trap” and “Maw Jaw” and continue the mission of deepening roots to heritage, deconstructing familiar tropes, and offering the fruits of those efforts back as thought-provoking dance performance.

To start off the evening, MLD will be sharing our film “Maw Jaw” created in partnership with Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center, which was presented as part of the 24th annual United States of Asian America Festival in free outdoor events at Portsmouth Square and Kapwa Gardens, May/June, 2021. “Maw Jaw” rehearsals occurred outside in public spaces—activating benches, railings, poles, stairs, and play structures around San Francisco Chinatown—inviting passersby to witness and be a part of the creative process, enhancing cross-generational community engagement, and inspiring interest in dance as a tool to engage with the environment/people around us.

In a time with particularly strong anti-Chinese sentiment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making work that contributes to the visibility of Chinese American artists feels especially urgent.

Megan Lowe Dances is fiscally sponsored by Dancers’ Group, and the “Tangram” project is honored to be supported by Kenneth Rainin Foundation NEW Program, Dancers’ Group’s CA$H Dance, FACT/SF Co-Production Grant, and generous individual donors.

Printz Dance Project: Ink and Bone

PDP presents Ink and Bone…a Dancers Journal, the world premiere of a story-driven, text-rich dance piece fusing Printz’ contemporary-jazz choreography with personal stories, prose, and visual imagery.

The company of contemporary-jazz dancers along with two actors harness stories of pain and trauma through an enlightened lens. Prior to the Covid lockdown, The Kennedy Center/The REACH offered Printz Dance Project a residency to develop a movement piece about Stacey Printz’s written journey of personal chronic pain. In March of 2020, the company hit the pause button and used the rawness of their quarantine journey to reconsider the angle of their story. After so many challenges, they are excited to be mounting this heartfelt, at times humorous, thought provoking world premiere.

Time of Change features live speaking, singing, and a pre-recorded audio tour for which live ASL interpretation and written transcripts will be provided. Audiences will be traversing just under 0.5 miles within a 2.5 block of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. This show’s live performance does require audiences to cross 4 intersections (with stop signs on a ‘Slow Street’ and street lights) with the audience group of 20. Three ushers and 1 production staff will be supporting patrons.
JGPG staff are available to assist with reserving tickets, either via email or calling 415-561-6565 to leave a message with your name, phone number, and times to call you back!

This is an in-person show that will guide small audience groups through the streets of the Haight-Ashbury to witness several pop-up moments of movement, music, monologue and more.

Time of Change will weave and examine the utopian ideals and failures of the hippie era – as they relate to our current revolution. The project will uplift real peoples’ histories, examine the whiteness of the hippie movement, and explore what intersectional liberation means.

JGPG is presenting this project with SF Heritage (in the Doolan-Larson Residence at Haight x Ashbury), to celebrate their 50th Anniversary (and JGPG’s 35th). Read more about Time of Change here.
