Printz Dance Project presents: Past/Present 2

This intimate evening of dance with the Printz Dance Project will include past repertory favorites along with new company work, a performance workshop piece , and screening of a short dance film.  This event is a benefit show to spark funding for PDP’s 2020 Season, and will include nightly raffles, photo booth, fun giveaways and more.

Eat, Drink and be Merry, for tomorrow we self-destruct

Dionysus Was Such a Nice Man is a comic and pungent take on the story of Oedipus from the perspective of the family of shepherds who raised him. It completely dismantles and reimagines Sophocles’ classic play, exploring the point of view of Alcinoe, Oedipus’s adoptive sister, and examining the ways in which bad behavior, particularly by powerful men, is excused, concealed, and exalted.

The text of the play seems almost custom built for foolsFURY, mixing physical theater and traditions of clowning as a lens to tackle this veritable smorgasbord of disfunction, hedonism and absurdity.

FoolsFURY is thrilled to be working with Kate Tarker at the outset of her career. We believe she will soon be an important voice in American Theater. This will be her West Coast debut, and only her second fully produced play.

Merde Project

The Merde Project is an artist commissioning project created and supported by Kristin Damrow & Company and Yikes! Oakland. In its inaugural year, Merde Project brings together four unique contemporary choreographers to present never before seen dance works around the theme of “taking risks.”

Sharp & Fine is intrigued by what happens when a large part of the emotional weight of a piece is built around an audience member (or members) speaking or moving, and the vulnerability and surprise that might emerge. Julie Crothers’ piece will be entirely informed by who is in the room, and with an eclectic cast sourced entirely from Craigslist. Fullstop Dance will attempt to construct the world of USPS’s Dead Letter Office, to capture all of its history, mystery, and loose ends. Macio Payomo will create movement using styles that are typically considered fringe art forms and showing their inherent beauty.

2019 Summer Dance Festival

Curated by FACT/SF Artistic Director, Charles Slender-White, the second annual FACT/SF Summer Dance Festival brings together four stylistically-diverse contemporary dance works, each one a world premiere. FACT/SF will present their own work alongside local dance companies tinypistol and dazaun.dance, and visiting artists, joyproject- Joy Davis (Boston) and Eric Mullis (Charlotte).

Davis and Mullis will perform Halidom, which will include original sound and movement scores developed in response to their travels in Japan and study of Butoh. While in Japan, Davis and Mulls will study directly with Yoshita Ohno, a Butoh master teacher and the son of Butoh co-founder, Kazuo Ohno. Kerr will premiere a duet, my beloved comet, which imagines our love amidst the cosmos, futurity, and liberation. Soleyn’s solo work, a message of truths, works to cultivate a space in which one can simply be enough. Slender-White’s new quintet, BackstitchBack, is the first iteration of his multi-year project on the repetitive and looping nature of memory formation and memory loss.

Summer Performance Festival 12 (SPF12)

SAFEhouse Arts Summer Performance Festival is an annual event featuring a range of the Bay Area’s dancers/dance makers, from mid-career artists to those just finding their voice. The festival acts as a cultural lab for new movement, experimental ideas and different modes of theatricality, which results is some of the most avant-garde performance in San Francisco. Artists are invited to freely investigate themes both personal and political, from the lyrical to visceral.

July 2019 will mark SAFEhouse’s 12th annual Summer Performance Festival (SPF12) with 2 weeks of 8 programs presented at Joe Goode Annex. SPF12 will feature new work by over 22 artists including Kitty Conlon, eMotion Arts, Kevin Wong, Bahiya Movement, PULP, Chelsea Van Billiard, Peri Trono, Kickbal, Emergence Dance Company, EbbFlow collective, Jennifer Perfilio | Movement Works, STEAMROLLER Dance Company, pateldanceworks, Rhea Speights, for change dance collective, Irene Hsi, Alma Esperanza Cunningham, Frankie Lee III, OOMPH Dance Theater, and more. Spanning contemporary, Brazilian, Ballet, Hip Hop, and theatrical dance disciplines the festival artists will explore myriad themes including isolation, resilience, hidden histories, crisis, healing.

Every day, we are asked to show up: for ourselves, our friends, families, lovers, and for our communities both immediate and on a larger scale. The way we show up reverberates to all other engagements. This belief is at the core of No Mirror Movement: the more we accept and love ourselves, the more we can accept and love one another, inviting us to engage in our communities more justly, righteously, and consciously.

No Mirror Movement’s first show, Kinesthesis, explores exactly this. This season, each member of the all-levels dance company identified a personal self, relational, or community-centered goal. This show is an expression of the work we have done this season to work towards these goals through practices of somatic healing, challenging norms and building community; we have explored how we relate to ourselves and others through dance, and how we use this higher movement to communicate the incommunicable.

In order to understand what is present for each of us, we used storytelling, somatic exercises, and journaling to find what was true and urgent for each of us. Much of this work began with getting in touch with our movement: the movements inside of our bodies (the temperature of our breath, the places of tension, the rhythm of our blood coursing), the movements among one another (the way we share space, our relationship to touch, how we enter a dance cypher), our movements within the world at large (how we take up space, where we hold back).

Getting in touch with this bodily wisdom is where this work starts for us and is where this Spring show derives its name. Take the Latin roots for “sense of” and “movement” and there you have it: kinesthesis.

We invite you to join us in this celebration of the wisdom found in our individual bodies, relational bodies, and collective bodies.

Understanding the strength of growth within community, this show is more than just entertainment, but a request for you to witness this celebration and prayer for individual, relational, and collective growth and healing.

BIG SALT

BIG SALT, a new work from The Anata Project about the clash between love and ambition in motherhood. This evening-length work for five dancers features an original score by Jonas Leuenberger and costumes by Jamielyn Duggan. A study in the embodiment of volatility, BIG SALT draws from images of tenderness, power struggle, and eruption to portray the world-shaking passage of becoming a parent.
