we are very excited to bring you the first in a new series of Virtual Open Houses – a platform for digital performance.

Show date: Friday, Oct 30th 2020 @ 7pm PST, streamed via Twitch.tv/joegoodeannex – please note, audiences will need to register via Twitch in order to participate in the live chat feature. We recommend it! To do so, you will need to create a username + pw (all free!) so please plan ahead and give yourself time to do so! You WILL be able to VIEW ONLY the stream without an account.

Our process was primarily on first-come first-served basis, with some light arranging by JGPG staff team GG, Melissa, Nicole—to work towards a balanced set of artists based on the following:

  • We held a minimum of 4 out of the 5 slots for BIPOC artists.
  • Work highlighting Queer/Trans Black Indigenous People of Color (QTBIPOC) visibility/bodies in the work itself
  • Having a range and balance of age, ability and career stage

Prompting Felt Material – Virtual Workshop

This in-depth multi-session workshop – co-led by Joe Goode and Patricia West – focuses on developing your tools for devising choreography. Since teaching ‘steps’ isn’t how most people choreograph anymore, let’s look at some ways to foster meaningful and generative collaborations with your performers, to develop movement material together. What prompts (images, writings, sounds) can you use to inspire them to move in ways they never could have imagined? How can we make the choreographic process enjoyable and exploratory? 

Learn from Joe Goode Performance Group’s methods for generating movement that is rooted in authenticity, creating a window into your and performers’ complex, fragile, and resilient humanities. You will be guided through various prompts – using movement, writing, imagery, and sound – to adjust, collide, and reflect on your self-generated choreographic material. To disrupt linear meaning-making and build an intuitive practice. You’ll also work on making and sharing your own prompts in break-out room sessions and smaller groups.

This multi-session workshop is built for dance-makers, devised theater artists, and dance educators. Sessions are cumulative, so we ask that participants are available for all four weeks. All 4 sessions will be held via Zoom** Mondays from 4-7pm, Oct 19-Nov 9.

GUSH: Queer Realities with Joe Goode Performance Group

Joe and dancers tell mini-stories of queerness by revisiting JGPG repertoire from their home spaces. Joe shares, “I’ve been thinking about the ‘thread’ that has carried through my journey as an artist. One thing that has been consistent is my desire to make queer lives and sensibilities visible; not as a political statement, but as a personal one. Life is brutal and clumsy and most of us are just bumbling our way through it. This is the reality for queer people too, and that is not what separates us from others, but rather what binds us to them. So ‘queer realities’ are imperfect, and fallible–yes, human.” Featuring performances by Melecio Estrella, Damara Ganley, Joe Goode, Molly Katzman, and Patricia West.

GUSH: Opening Night Peach Party 🍑

Joe Goode Performance Group’s first-ever festival at the Annex is now adapting its goal for artistic dialogue & proximity — into a scaled-back, virtual platform — to occur during its originally scheduled time. GUSH aims to honor and uplift the ongoing work of dance-making (and now, during a pandemic), in its messiness, resilience, and persistence.

Access virtual streaming of: classes, interactive short works for feedback, and talks with artists. GUSH features Joe Goode Performance Group, GERALDCASELDANCE, and NAKA Dance Theater — as they experiment with shared creative prompts and explore what their virtual artistic practices look like.

Wednesday, May 27, 6-7pm: Feature Artist Practice – NAKA Dance Theater’s BUSCARTE
José Navarrete and Debby Kajiyama will present excerpts of BUSCARTE (Searching for You), a performance that contemplates the forensic anthropology findings in the case of the 43 students from Ayotzinapa Teachers’ College who were forcibly disappeared in Iguala, Guerrero, Mexico in 2014.

Thursday, May 28, 4-6pm: Dancing Around Race with Gerald Casel
Gerald Casel will be joined by Rebecca Chaleff, Sammay Dizon, Kimani Fowlin, David Herrera, Yayoi Kambara, Kate Mattingly, Raissa Simpson, and Tria Blu Wakpa to hold space for this unique gathering during GUSH, paying particular attention to how systemic racial inequity is playing out during this pandemic. Moderated by Bhumi Patel, we will be asking how and where we go from here as well as sharing thoughts on imagining an alternative future that is equitable and just.

Friday, May 29: 4-5pm: Feature Artist Practice –Not About Race Dance with GERALDCASELDANCE
GCD will discuss the process of making Not About Race Dance,  a collaborative choreographic response to the unmarked predominance of whiteness in US postmodern dance. The work cites Neil Greenberg’s Not About AIDS Dance to connect the silence around the AIDS epidemic with the unacknowledged racial politics of postmodern dance.

Friday, May 29, 7-8:30pm: The Case of the 43 Disappeared Students of Ayotzinapa: A virtual conversation with Omar Garcia
This virtual conversation will be in Spanish with English interpretation. As part of NAKA Dance Theater’s BUSCARTE Project and in association with EastSide Arts Alliance, NAKA dialogues with Omar Garcia, a survivor of the student massacre of September 26, 2014 in Iguala, Guerrero, Mexico.

Celebrating artists in our wider Annex community, 8 local dance-makers will share short works-in-progress in an afternoon of virtual interaction, drop in anytime! Borrowing from JGPG’s program of dialogue and learning, The Feedback, viewers will be invited to respond to a question from each artist via Zoom chat. Featuring Gabriel Christian, Sierra Don, Jhia Jackson, Nicole Maimon, Nathaniel Moore, Jocelyn Reyes, randy reyes, Molly Rose-Williams, Amy/Hannah Wasielewski and Alyssandra Wu

Open Saturday classes taught either by Joe Goode or Joe Goode Performance Group company members focusing on gentle, restorative movement. 10-11:15am.

Movement for Humans is an all-levels movement class, developed by Joe Goode. Movement for Humans is a movement class for all ages and all bodies that fosters a deeply present state, allowing a gentle exploration of the body wherein movement becomes pleasurable and our physical expectations are set aside. The movement sequencing is designed to facilitate an unpacking of the body, bringing it into a state of creative receptivity. A safe and supportive environment—no experience required!

Virtual: Dance for Parkinson’s Class Series

As an affiliate program of Dance for PD, Joe Goode Performance Group teaches a Dance for Parkinson’s class. Our classes are based on the innovative Dance for PD program designed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group. Using this method, professional dancers draw on their unique expertise to help people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers engage sight, sound, touch, thought, and imagination to bring control to their movements. While strengthening, balancing, and moving in rhythm to live music, people with PD also experience the power of dance and music to sharpen attention, inspire, and empower.

For the past 7 years, JGPG has offered regular Dance for Parkinson’s classes in our home studio, the Annex. While we wish we could meet in person as pictured above, JGPG is honored to include this class in our virtual Zoom offerings. Taught online every Sunday and mostly from a seated position, these classes are designed to be taken from a home space. You’ll be guided by a JGPG teaching artist: Damara Ganley or Becca Dean.

The class begins with a grounding meditation, breathing awareness, and spinal articulation—then, gently transitions to some upper/lower body movement, improvisation, and witnessing of the group. Each class ends with 15 minutes of facilitated conversation & relationship-building.

We invite our community to share this class opportunity with anyone you know that is living with Parkinson’s + their caretakers; it is specially designed for them in mind. Help us spread the word!

Dancing in chairs, at a barre, or standing, experienced teaching artists will lead participants in an enjoyable blend of modern dance, ballet, tap, jazz, and social dancing. While strengthening, balancing, and moving in rhythm to live music, people with PD also experience the power of dance and music to sharpen attention, inspire, and empower.
