Dancing Around Race

Hosted by Hope Mohr Dance: Dancing Around Race Community Engagement Gathering features Guest Speaker Barbara Bryan, Executive Director of Movement Research and independent performing arts producer, manager and curator.

The discussion will cover institutional thinking and models for advancing equity in the field, including:

  • Movement Research as both institution and organization–how does the language of equity work or change depending on who is speaking and who is present in the audience
  • The internal work that MR, as a traditionally white institution, has been doing towards equity, and the successes and challenges of that internal work
  • MR’s Artists of Color council
  • MR’s Board Committee for Racial Equity
  • How can this work remain artist-driven?

The Feedback Showing 2019

Joe Goode Performance Group’s Feedback program is designed to offer an in-process response for local choreographers to have support in the development of new and experimental dance works. Five choreographers were selected for the 2019 program cohort, each receiving free rehearsal space at the Joe Goode Annex for development (among other benefits), as well as a shared feedback session with Joe Goode and JGPG Company Members. Presented by the Joe Goode Performance Group, The Feedback Showing is about putting pencil to paper and offering up impressions, thoughts and questions about the dance moment just experienced. Audience members will participate in the process by responding in real-time with written feedback. 5 Feedback Artists have created something deeply important to them, and The Feedback audience plays a crucial role in receiving & responding to their new works. It’s about listening to others and discovering new voices in the conversation. It’s about supporting the local dance theater community toward broad investigation and deep feeling.

Greek Feet

Greek Dance Class hosted by Greek Feet.

“Grab your mandili, white handkerchief, and step into a world of Greek dance at Joe Goode Annex. Explore the spirit of Greece through the music and dance of several regions. This vibrant dance community welcomes everyone, beginner to advanced. We will offer a class designed for the beginner from 7-7:30. We encourage students from this class to stay for the next class starting at 7:30 pm. The first hour is dedicated to instruction and the second hour is practice of previously learned dances requested by students. Each month we emphasize a different region of Greece.”

Tuesday Waves is an open 5Rhythms class, hosted by The City Waves. Everyone is welcomed.

“As we ride the waves of life, we share the spirited mix, eclectic nature of our culture, community and co-existence. The City Waves passionately brings out the potent medicine of this moving meditation with clarity, power and grace. Waves all around us, waves from inside us, waves from dancing together. Waves that inspire our body to move, whether on familiar and unfamiliar rhythms and beats to discover, challenge, mesmerize, explore and appreciate more of who we are. We find the truth through the body, as the beats changes. There is no need to have any particular physical background or to consider ourselves dancers or not. We keep moving with the music and the dance will come to us. We dance until the dancer disappears and only the dance remains. Please respect the tribe’s intention and integrity by arriving on time. Please enter through the black gate at corner of Alabama St and 17th. If gate is locked, please ring the bell, we will buzz you in. Then enter the first door on your right.”
