We present the 5th iteration of When Eyes Speak, San Francisco’s First South Asian Choreography Festival, curated by Preethi Ramaprasad and Shruti Abhishek. When Eyes Speak has been featured as a Critic’s Pick by the San Francisco Chronicle, and has been supported by the American Conservatory Theater, San Francisco Arts Commission, Zellerbach Family Foundation, Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center, Dance Mission Theatre, and Safehouse Arts to name a few. The festival hopes to support artists in endeavors showcasing the ingenuity and vastness of South Asian diasporic movement and art practices.
Saabit Qadam – Perseverance is Farah Yasmeen Shaikh and Noorani Dance Company’s humble way of honoring the artists of Pakistan – highlighting some that have been of great personal nostalgic influence, from childhood to present day. Whether their work was steeped in activism or not, they have persevered throughout decades, to develop, reclaim, and celebrate their artistry, and that of their history and culture – shared with many across various borders that define the South Asian diaspora and beyond. The show also features the artwork of Kalamkari artist and deisgner Nikita Shah.
