HMD presents Bacchae Before is a hybrid, experimental work of live performance co-created by Mike Chin (puppeteer), Maxe Crandall (playwright), Belinda He (performer), Hope Mohr (choreographer), Wiley Naman Strasser (performer), Karla Quintero (performer), and Silk Worm (performer). Coming out of two years of Mohr’s choreographic research under COVID and an ongoing cross-disciplinary collaboration between Crandall and Mohr, Bacchae Before is inspired by Anne Carson’s irreverent translation of Euripedes’ Bacchae and the modern tragedies of gender reveal parties.
In Bacchae Before, we collide false binaries: form and non-form, objecthood and sentience, set choreography and improvisation, metered time and non-metered time, dance and language.
We warp the gender reveal party into a ritual for the trans kids we love, value, and want futures for. Through celebration, we undermine and explode the trope of “reveal.”
Because the moment of reveal is a fiction. Our potentiality has been with us all along.
