Celebrating artists in our wider Annex community, local dance-makers will share short works-in-progress in an afternoon of virtual interaction. Drop in anytime! Borrowing from JGPG’s program of dialogue and learning, The Feedback, viewers will be invited to respond to a question from each artist via Google Doc or Zoom chat. We’re kicking off the virtual GUSH Festival with Movement for Humans — an all-levels movement class, developed by Joe Goode. Movement for Humans is a movement class for all ages and all bodies that fosters a deeply present state, allowing a gentle exploration of the body wherein movement becomes pleasurable and our physical expectations are set aside. The movement sequencing is designed to facilitate an unpacking of the body, bringing it into a state of creative receptivity. A safe and supportive environment—no experience required!

The Feedback 2020 – Application Deadline

We welcome Bay Area performance makers (a diversity of voices, bodies, and practices) to apply for The Feedback 2020! The Feedback is an opportunity for 5 choreographers to share & develop a short work of existing choreography, supported by feedback from the Joe Goode Performance Group and the Feedback cohort. 

The program is designed to offer in-process response from multiple perspectives; including that of Joe Goode, company members of JGPG, and the participants in the program. JGPG supports creative growth and innovation and is committed to promoting conversations about performance and dance-making. Joe Goode Performance Group is dedicated to creating opportunity, space, and resources for a cohort of 5 performing artists invested in their choreographic process. POSTPONED: The Feedback Showing 2020

Joe Goode Performance Group’s Feedback program is designed to offer an in-process response for local choreographers to have support in the development of new and experimental dance works. Five choreographers were selected for the 2019 program cohort, each receiving free rehearsal space at the Joe Goode Annex for development (among other benefits), as well as a shared feedback session with Joe Goode and JGPG Company Members. Presented by the Joe Goode Performance Group, The Feedback Showing is about putting pencil to paper and offering up impressions, thoughts and questions about the dance moment just experienced. Audience members will participate in the process by responding in real-time with written feedback. 5 Feedback Artists have created something deeply important to them, and The Feedback audience plays a crucial role in receiving & responding to their new works. It’s about listening to others and discovering new voices in the conversation. It’s about supporting the local dance theater community toward broad investigation and deep feeling.

We have currently paused this program’s activities in the Annex, and the rescheduling of the Showing has yet to be determined. Stay tuned!

2020 Feedback Artists

Gabriel Christian

Gabriel Christian (they/them) is an American artist bred in New York City (Wappinger Lenape land) and baking in Oakland (Chochenyo Ohlone land). For more than ten years, their work has metabolized the vernaculars within BlaQ diaspora—futurity, afrovivalism, faggotry—through high dramatics, structured improvisation, poetics, and collaborative practices; moreover, they feel the bio to be in the unfortunate lineage of value models like chattel slavery.

Karla Quintero

Karla Quintero is dancer and dance-maker originally from New York City, currently living in Oakland. Most recently she has performed in works by Gerald Casel, Aura Fischbeck, Catherine Galasso (NYC), and Hope Mohr, including dancing in the Opera “Das Wunder der Heliane,” which debuted this summer at Bard’s SummerScape Festival. In 2017, she received an Isadora Duncan Award for her performance in Jo Kreiter’s “Grace and Delia are Gone.” Locally, Karla’s choreography has received support from the City of Oakland’s Cultural Funding Program, the Zellerbach Family Foundation and the Clorox Foundation, and from artistic residencies at the Garage (SF), Shawl Anderson Dance Center (Oakland) & the Temescal Arts Center (Oakland). She holds a BFA from SUNY Purchase’s Conservatory of Dance and a BA in Urban Studies from Barnard College. | karlajohannaquintero.tumblr.com

Katie Wong

Katerina (Katie) Wong is a Co-Artistic Director of RAWdance. Since graduating from Princeton University and moving west, she’s had the pleasure of performing with RAWdance, Printz Dance Project, Concept o4, Bellwether Dance Project, and the SF Symphony, among others. Katie’s work has been commissioned by PUSH Dance Company, FACT/SF, Cutting Ball Theater, California Academy of Sciences, and ACLU of Northern California. In 2017, she was the first dance artist to tour nationally with Pop-Up Magazine, which culminated in a performance at Lincoln Center. Her choreography has been presented locally at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Z Space, ODC Theater, CounterPulse, Fort Mason, Piano Fight, Yerba Buena Gardens, and more. She is currently participating in Dance/USA’s Institute for Leadership Training program and Women of Color in the Arts’ (WOCA) Leadership through Mentorship program. katerinawong.com / rawdance.org 

Molly Rose-Williams

Molly Rose-Williams is a mover, dance-maker, educator, writer, and community arts organizer. She has presented her work throughout the Bay Area, Vermont, and Maine, and internationally in Mexico and Belgium. She is the co-founder and producer of Show & Tell, a quarterly multi-disciplinary performance salon, and regularly facilitates “Creation Labs”, an on-going project for community research of the creative process. Nathaniel Moore

Nathaniel is a performance artist grounded in movement and in meetings. Their work always in in relation to their identity , white cis male, and all the identities entities forces which go into the creation of their identity. In between, in the meeting point, is a dance, potential, challenge, or embrace, or a word mouthed, taken into the gut, a light, and.

CANCELLED – Dance for Parkinson’s Class

This event is cancelled. Since the rapid progression of COVID-19, the City of San Francisco is recommending canceling “non-essential public gatherings” of over 50 people. We may be able to reschedule, but given the current uncertainty, we aren’t in a position to know when.

As for other activities coming up for Joe Goode Performance Group and at the Joe Goode Annex? We are monitoring the situation closely and aligning our response with recommendations from the San Francisco Department of Public Health. As an affiliate program of Dance for PD, Joe Goode Performance Group teaches a Dance for Parkinson’s class at the Joe Goode Annex. Our classes are based on the innovative Dance for PD program designed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group. Using this method, professional dancers draw on their unique expertise to help people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers engage sight, sound, touch, thought, and imagination to bring control to their movements. Dancing in chairs, at a barre, or standing, experienced teaching artists will lead participants in an enjoyable blend of modern dance, ballet, tap, jazz, and social dancing. While strengthening, balancing, and moving in rhythm to live music, people with PD also experience the power of dance and music to sharpen attention, inspire, and empower.

I never understood why the dancer should be mute—a dumb rule in my book. I also do not view dance as separate from theater. I am interested in the performative moment as a moment of revelation, of intimacy. whatever can bring me there is fair game.
