Saharla Vetsch (she/her) AKA Major Hammy is a Somali American multidisciplinary artist rooted in the Bay Area. Saharla earned a degree in Performing Arts and Social Justice with a concentration on dance from the University of San Francisco. Her artistic and academic journey has been marked by a profound commitment to the transformative power of movement. Saharla’s teaching and performances encourage and celebrate the intersecting identities that make up who we are and inform how we all engage with the world and each other. She does this in the spaces of queer nightlife entertainment, intergenerational dance education, and through collaborative dance performances. As Major, Saharla strives to be a beacon of self-expression, harnessing the liberating power of dance to ignite the same sense of freedom in others.

Major Hammy sports androgynous looks and performances that leave audiences “sexually confused” with jaws on the floor. This Drag King has a chaotic vigor and proves that masculinity and femininity can coexist in a mustached package. Major often performs in nightlife spaces such as Oasis & the Stud, but also has created performances that combine drag, vertical dance, and spectacle put on in traditional theater spaces. Combining multiple art forms and gender ideas is what makes Major Hammy, and at the core of everything he does is technical and high energy movement.

At its heart, this program is a celebration—a lifting up of BIPOC ancestral knowledge and voices. It’s about remembering, honoring, and living into the indigenous understandings of sex and gender that have existed long before western drag. From the revered Two-Spirit people of Turtle Island, to the Bakla of the Philippines, to the Māhū of Hawai’i and beyond—these are not just identities, but lineages of wisdom, resilience, and spirit.

What can we learn from our ancestors that speaks to who we are today? How do their truths help shape our liberation?

This isn’t just entertainment—it’s ceremony. It’s storytelling. It’s culture in motion. The Annex is a space where culture bearers remix, reclaim, and reimagine drag in ways them mainstream might never show you.
